"Casey, are you worried about the death penalty?"
WFTV-Channel 9's Kathi Belich, the market's best shouter, was at it again Monday. When Belich roared at Casey Anthony, the suspect started running. Belich brings such prosecutorial gusto to her shoutouts that Perry Mason would be impressed.
In a softer voice, Belich also asked, "Are you nervous about the grand jury tomorrow?" Casey Anthony, the mother of missing Caylee, said nothing. But Belich studied Casey's face and determined the answer was yes.
Belich had help because, as she noted, Casey was not wearing "her big, white, stolen sunglasses."
WESH-Channel 2's Bob Kealing, a good reporter, also called out, "Are you nervous about tomorrow, Casey?" But he is no match for Belich in the bellowing department. WFTV realized what it had with Belich -- it used her dramatic shouting repeatedly.
At 5 p.m., WFTV and WKMG-Channel 6 warned that they would monitor Tuesday's developments closely. Be prepared for the regular schedule to be interrupted often. The Anthony story was the first story on the 6 p.m. newscasts on WFTV, WESH, WKMG and WOFL-Channel 35.
The grand jury will hear from a half dozen witnesses Tuesday, including George Anthony, Casey's father.
Cindy Anthony, Casey's mother, was talking to the press a lot on Monday. It seemed like old times.
Cindy told WFTV she was worried for Caylee and not for Casey, who could defend herself from "purely circumstantial evidence."
Cindy told WESH that the state attorney was using Casey for political purposes.
Cindy told WKMG that she was angry that her daughter had been tried in the court of public opinion and that Casey is upset about Caylee and not the grand jury.
What do you make of all that?
Monday's reporting was a prelude to the heavy coverage that's coming Tuesday. Brace yourselves.
