Jeez.
I'm a gun owner, and I taught my son to shoot at 12. He doesn't kill things, and I'll never push him to do that. He likes to target shoot cans and stuff...always with an adult nearby, whether it's me or his grandfather.
So I hope I don't appear hypocritical when I say this....
But an eight-year-old child is too young to take out and kill animals.
If dad would have taken the kid out to pop cans, that'd have been ok...but taking out to kill things at such a young age...no telling how it affected this kid.
I just do not believe that this child premeditated murder for no reason. There has to be much more to the story.
1) This happened when the mother was in town visiting the child. She had come from Mississippi to visit, and left to return to Mississippi when the shooting happened. She's back in AZ with the boy.
2) Abuse? There is alleged to have been domestic violence in the household--the police had responded to domestic violence calls between the boy's father and his stepmother.
What do y'all think? I just can't fathom a child doing this for no reason.
I am very sad for the loss of the father. By all reports, he was a decent guy. Of course, people aren't privy to what goes on inside other people's houses.
And the boy had never been in trouble in any way--no records of any kind of discipline problems at school.
Something caused this little boy to break. Wish we knew what it was.

First off Quick, you are no hypocrite. I not a gun fan and wont pretend to be, but my dad(ok, step dad, but he raised me, he's my dad!), brother, and many others that I love do hunt, and target shoot. There is a responsible way to raise a child and teach them about guns, the danger, the responsiblites, the consequences and you obviously know that and have passed it onto your son, as my dad did with my brother......So I am scratching my head on this one also.....there has to be SO much more to this story!! I havent read the rest of the story, need to get caught up on this, so tragic, and man, what about that young boy? What will happen to him? There HAS to be much, much more to this story, the abuse angle is compelling, but sheesh, how does an eight year old come to the conclusion to kill the father as the answer, unless someone else has put the idea in his head? I am not going the way of violent TV, video games, etc. Too easy...There is really something horribly awry.

justme...
The fact that the kid had access to the gun AND the ammo is telling. I'm sure a lot of people think that a 22 is a pea-shooter and that it could injure but not kill. This story certainly corrects that misconception. The gun and ammo should have been under lock and key. Hell, police departments give away trigger locks these days....there's no excuse to have an unlocked gun and ammo in the house.
Your final point...it's too easy to blame violent media...I certainly agree. I think Americans have accepted that violent media is a fact of our environment these days. I don't think that the answer lies there.
Something happened to snap this kid. I hope that someone cares enough to get to the bottom of it.
The sheriff appears to be a major asshole. He questioned the kid without advising him of his rights, without having a parent or attorney present, and he wanted him to be tried as an adult (WTF?).
I'm sick of hearing about what a "good man" the father was. Something was broken inside that household. I hope that other basement dwellers will follow this case with me.

At 8 years old, how much trouble could he have been at school. Maybe minor things. He is a baby. Something fishy was going on there. Jealousy of the new wife? Why not kill her and not the friend.
