New York Teacher Vanishes After Getting Flat Tire on Highway Tuesday, October 28, 2008
Police in Nassau County, New York, are seeking clues in the disappearance of a teacher, Leah Walsh, 29.
Long Island police are searching for a schoolteacher who disappeared after her car broke down on the side of a highway.
Leah Walsh, 29, called her husband William on Monday to tell him about the flat tire she got while driving on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway near Bethpage, N.Y. — but by the time he got there she was gone, Long Island's Newsday newspaper reported.
She was reported missing by her husband at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials at the school in Glen Cove where Walsh teaches autistic children also notified police when she failed to show up for work that morning.
William Walsh said that his wife's purse was found as he was searching the area around her abandoned 2005 Ford Focus with authorities later that day, the paper reported.
An emotional Walsh appealed to the public to help bring his wife home.
"You can have my cars," he told Newsday. "You can have everything. I just want my wife back."
Police said they were treating Walsh's disappearance as a missing persons case, not an abduction, the New York Daily News reported.
Lucas Bean, a friend of the young woman, told the Daily News that she had marital problems following a "huge fight" with her husband on Sunday.
Bean told the paper Williams texted him while she was traveling from her parents' house to her apartment in Bethpage.
A close friend of the young woman told the Daily News that she was distraught about problems in her marriage after having a "huge fight" with her husband Sunday.
Lucas Bean, who said he's known Walsh she was a freshman in college, said she texted him while she was on the way from her parents' house in Rockville Centre to her apartment in Bethpage.
"She was telling me that things are not going to work out with her and her husband and she had to tell me something very important, but she needed to wait til she got out of the car with him," Bean, 32, of Los Angeles, told the paper.
"She was in the car with him texting to me so that was Sunday night and they were in a huge fight," Bean continued.
Bean told the paper he never learned what the fight was about.

Authorities searching for a schoolteacher reported missing two days ago found the body of a white female Wednesday near a busy highway in Long Island, N.Y., and are treating the case as a homicide investigation, police told FOX News.
The discovery along the Long Island Expressway's North Service Road, near Shelter Rock Road, is about 10 miles from where Leah Walsh's car was found abandoned with a flat tire early Monday morning, said Nassau County Police Department spokesman Lt. Kevin Smith.
Police could not confirm whether the body was Walsh's, but said they are investigating the case as a homicide.
The 29-year-old special education teacher was reported missing after failing to arrive at her Glen Cove school on Monday morning.
Her car was later found — coincidentally by her father, a bus driver who happened to be on the highway later Monday morning -- but there was no sign of the woman. Her purse turned up in a ditch nearby.
Earlier Wednesday, rush-hour traffic was stopped for miles along the northbound Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway in Bethpage as police handed out a "missing persons" flier with a photo of the teacher, as well as a picture of her 2005 Ford Focus. The car was locked near an exit ramp of the highway, with a flat front tire.
Detectives questioned the woman's husband, William Walsh, on Tuesday, but police emphasized it was a routine part of the investigation and noted they had no suspects in the woman's disappearance. He was cooperating with authorities, Smith said.
Leah Walsh, who usually leaves her home for work between 6:15 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., sent a text message to her husband at about 6:25 a.m. Monday, telling him to "have a great day," William Walsh told 1010 WINS radio.
"That's the last I heard from her," he said.
He spoke to reporters later outside the couple's home in Bethpage, before the discovery of the body. "I miss her more than anything," he said.
He described his wife as an "easygoing person" who loved her students. "She wouldn't just leave them," he said. "Something had to have happened."
But Lucas Bean, a friend of Leah Walsh's who lives in Los Angeles, told the New York Daily News that she texted him over the weekend to say that she was in a "huge fight" with her husband and things were not going to work out between them.
The couple have been married for three years; they have no children, police said.

Police find female body in North Hills (10/29/08) NORTH HILLS – Authorities are trying to determine if a body found Wednesday in North Hills is that of a missing teacher from Bethpage. Nassau police recovered the body from a wooded area near the North Hills Country Club after it was discovered Wednesday morning. Police say the body is that of a white female and was discovered by a country club worker at approximately 8 a.m. Although police have been searching for the missing, 29-year-old teacher since Monday, they are at this point considering the body as a separate case. “This is an undetermined homicide, we have not identified the body, we still have a missing persons case going on and a homicide," says Nassau County Lt. Detective Kevin Smith. The teacher, Leah Walsh, was reported missing after failing to arrive at her Glen Cove school. Her car was found abandoned with a flat tire early Monday along the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway. The body found in North Hills was about 13 miles from where Walsh’s car was located. This is how the story is being reported in local news. They have yet to commit to the fact that is Leah's body. They are interviewing her husband now and he is crying. (not sure I believe him) They are searching the couple's home for clues. Something does not smell right. This is the link to the LI News station. (10/30/08) MINEOLA - The husband of a 29-year-old Bethpage special-education teacher found dead in North Hills Wednesday has confessed to choking her to death after the two had an altercation at their home Sunday morning, Nassau police said at a press conference Thursday morning. Police said Bill Walsh came home early Sunday morning from a trip to Atlantic City and engaged in a verbal dispute with Leah Walsh. The dispute, possibly over his alleged infidelity with one or more women, escalated into a physical fight that ended when he choked her to death, police said. Cops had been searching for Leah Walsh since Monday, when her abandoned car was found on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway. Investigators say her front right tire was flat with no recognizable tire damage, indicating that the air had been let out of the tire manually. Walsh’s body was found in a wooded area outside the North Hills Country Club by an employee of the club, police said. Bill Walsh dumped the body at the location at about 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, after he did laundry and went to McDonald’s, possibly to help establish an alibi for the murder. After her body was recovered, Bill Walsh was arrested by homicide squad detectives and he later confessed, police said. Walsh’s attorneys say their client was coerced by police into giving a confession. “He was in custody for over 15 hours, sleep deprived, the inability to speak to family, friend or lawyers, and in fact, they used trickery and deception to get him to say the things they say he said,” says attorney Karl Seman. According to detectives, Walsh’s seven-page confession came after six and a half hours of questioning. Walsh has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges and is being held without bail. www.news12.com/LI/topstories/article?id=220010Bastard!
